Written by Progressive Multiplier | Jul 13, 2026 1:01:08 PM

Founded in 2004, IDEAS for Us has grown to be one of Florida's leading environmental education and action organizations. Through community-based programs including Fleet Farming, tree planting, shoreline restoration, and environmental education, IDEAS for Us develops ideas, funds action, and scales solutions across Orlando, Tampa, St. Petersburg, Miami, and beyond.

Overview

With a grant from Progressive Multiplier, IDEAS for Us developed a membership-based Learning Management System (LMS) to create sustainable revenue while expanding environmental education capacity.

By designing a comprehensive approach including digital advertising, email campaigns, corporate outreach, and content development, IDEAS for Us built financial independence while strengthening educational impact. The project transformed their online engagement and created pathways for individual and corporate support.

Key Strategies & Tactics

IDEAS for Us's membership initiative consisted of several integrated components:

  • Membership Platform Development: Building a dedicated LMS featuring repurposed educational content exclusively for members, with members contributing to content creation
  • Individual Membership Campaign: Testing $8.99/month pricing through email, social media, billboard, and digital advertising targeted at Florida constituents
  • Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program: Developing business membership offerings targeting Florida-based sustainability companies
  • Multi-Channel Marketing: Deploying coordinated campaigns across Facebook, email newsletters, billboards, and digital advertising
  • Event Integration: Incorporating membership asks into live events including educational classes, fundraisers, and community gatherings

Lessons Learned

Know Your Brand and Use It

Messaging aligned with organizational identity proved essential for selling membership and maintaining authenticity

Invest in Technical Expertise

Digital revenue generation requires specialized knowledge in SEO, social media algorithms, and website architecture

Diagnose Platform Issues Early

Technical problems—such as multiple similar-sounding Facebook pages appearing cloned or fake—can suppress ad visibility and waste marketing dollars

Focus Resources Strategically

Corporate membership proved more efficient than individual membership, yielding higher returns per relationship

Integrate Across All Channels

Cross-posting content while referencing website blogs improves search engine optimization and audience reach

Build on Existing Networks

Professional networks provide valuable diagnostic help, though solutions may require multiple perspectives

The Multiplier Effect

Impact

Through this experiment, IDEAS for Us discovered critical insights about their online presence that had suppressed digital reach for years. Multiple Facebook pages with similar names caused content to appear cloned or fake, leading Facebook to suppress ad visibility. This discovery alone justified the investment, opening new perspectives on planning activities and using online tools effectively.

The corporate membership component proved particularly valuable. A single CSR member contributed $6,500 after being reached through Facebook advertising. Another company initially engaged through business membership entered discussions for a potential $70,000 environmental education services contract, demonstrating how membership serves as a gateway to larger partnerships.

The project required significant investment beyond the grant—engaging board members, advisory board, three core staff, and two marketing firms. This intensive collaboration built organizational capacity in digital marketing, SEO, and online audience engagement. Leadership developed new understanding of launching campaigns in tandem with blog posts, social media, newsletter integration, and potentially podcasts.

While the project returned less than 50% of the budget during the grant period, IDEAS for Us views it as a success because of tremendous learning generated. The team now better understands what it takes to be relevant online and the time and technology required. They implemented fundamental changes: associating all Facebook pages under their main page; overhauling their website to help Google better categorize and rank the site; and focusing on business membership over individual membership as a more sustainable strategy.

As of July following the project period, IDEAS for Us projects making $50,000 in the first year from the LMS, with plans to double their investment annually. The organization reinvested funding back into ongoing campaigns and maintained their developer employment to manage continued revenue generation while creating another job in their community. The modern efforts launched in 2024 are more informed than ever before, positioning IDEAS for Us to see their investment go even further in building financial sustainability while advancing their environmental education mission.
