The Latino Network Action Fund (LNAF) is a Latina/o led 501(c)(4) organization created to advocate for legislation, regulations, and programs that promote the general welfare of the Latinx Community in Oregon. With a grant from the Progressive Multiplier Fund, they are developing a fundraising plan for 2024 and beyond as they look to achieve flexibility outside of the restrictions that accompany most (c)(4) grants.
LNAF undertook a strategic capacity-building initiative to establish sustainable independent revenue generation. By focusing on building essential fundraising infrastructure, LNAF created a pathway toward financial sustainability while strengthening their ability to effectively represent and mobilize Oregon's Latinx community. The project demonstrated how emerging advocacy organizations can strategically invest in foundational systems before launching ambitious fundraising campaigns.
LNAF's independent revenue generation initiative consisted of several integrated components designed to build capacity while beginning to generate revenue:
LNAF transformed from a theoretical concept to a structured program with clear systems and strategies. While the financial results fell short of initial projections, the organization achieved significant capacity improvements that positioned them for future success. Their expanded supporter base, enhanced partnerships, and improved advocacy effectiveness demonstrate the value of investing in fundraising infrastructure.
The Spring Reception fundraising event exceeded expectations, with attendance increasing from an anticipated 50 people to 75 people. This success validated their approach to in-person fundraising and built confidence for future efforts. The organization now has two dedicated organizers and development staff time focused on c4 activities, enabling them to better hold elected officials accountable and advance their mission.
LNAF's journey illustrates the challenges and opportunities facing grassroots advocacy organizations seeking financial independence. By prioritizing infrastructure development and relationship-building, they created a foundation for sustainable growth while enhancing their ability to represent Oregon's Latinx community effectively. Their experience offers valuable lessons for other social justice organizations seeking to reduce dependence on restricted funding while building deeper connections with their communities.
