Rewire News Group is a Virginia-based nonprofit journalism organization with 14 staff dedicated to reporting on reproductive justice and the intersection of racial and reproductive justice. The organization operates at a challenging intersection: reproductive justice funders prioritize direct service while journalism funders view reproductive justice as too niche.
With a $25,000 grant from Progressive Multiplier Fund, Rewire partnered with News Revenue Hub to launch their first membership campaign. Prior to this grant, Rewire averaged $85,000 annually in individual donations and ran only two fundraising campaigns per year.
The partnership enabled Rewire to expand from two to six targeted campaigns annually. Donor surveys revealed supporters wanted to understand their impact and see where their money goes, leading to a tiered membership design emphasizing community-building and access to journalists.
1. Strategic Campaign Expansion and Timing
Expanded from two to six annual campaigns: February lapsed donor recapture, spring fundraising, June Supreme Court session, end-of-summer rapid response, and year-end appeals.
2. Impact-Driven Membership Program Design
Designed tiered membership levels converting one-time donors to monthly members through increased access to journalists and community spaces.
3. Email Fundraising Optimization
Achieved 40% click-through rates and 46% open rates with 3.6% conversion from newsletter reader to donor, above the 3.5% peer benchmark.
4. Technology Infrastructure Integration
Implemented integrated tech stack: Salesforce for donor management, Stripe for payments, Mailchimp for campaigns, with Slack integration for real-time donation notifications.
Set Achievable Goals Based on Data, Not Just Budget Needs
Analyze historical data month-by-month, excluding outliers, to set realistic projections.
Donors Want Impact Transparency During Supreme Court Arguments, Not Just Decisions
Supporters engage and give during argument phases, not just when decisions are released.
Direct Donation Asks Outperform Newsletter Signup Campaigns
Focused donation requests proved more effective than campaigns including newsletter CTAs.
Year-Long Revenue Planning Drives Strategic Thinking
Annual projections shifted Rewire from reactive quarterly planning to proactive goal-setting.
Cross-Organizational Collaboration Strengthens Fundraising Culture
Fundraising became everyone's responsibility across audience, newsletter, podcast, and editorial teams.
Specialist Support Accelerates Product Launches
Dedicated specialists enabled launching three newsletters in one month—unusual for a 14-person newsroom.
Through this strategic investment in revenue generation capacity, Rewire News Group transformed a $25,000 grant into $108,578 in annual revenue—more than quadrupling the initial investment while building sustainable systems for ongoing fundraising success. The partnership with News Revenue Hub enabled the organization to execute six carefully designed campaigns throughout the year, each meeting or coming very close to monthly fundraising goals and providing valuable insights about donor behavior and preferences that will inform future efforts.
This approach not only raised funds but fundamentally transformed organizational culture around revenue generation. For the first time in Rewire's history, editorial staff began proactively approaching the development team with campaign ideas—like when they detected AI-generated content that major outlets missed and immediately recognized it as a fundraising opportunity to highlight human-powered journalism. The cross-functional collaboration extended across audience, newsletter, podcast, and editorial teams, making fundraising everyone's responsibility rather than solely the development team's domain and impressing major funders who saw a small reproductive justice newsroom not just surviving but thriving during challenging times for both journalism and reproductive rights.
Originally motivated by the need to build sustainable individual giving infrastructure for independent reproductive justice journalism, the grant positioned Rewire to launch their first official membership program in November 2025, prepared to convert one-time donors into monthly members through tiered benefits emphasizing community connection and direct access to journalists. The organization also launched three new newsletters and one new podcast during the grant period—an extraordinary achievement for a 14-person newsroom that demonstrated how strategic investment in revenue generation capacity, combined with specialist support and accountability partnerships, can create transformational rather than incremental change for mission-critical journalism serving reproductive justice movements.
