Founded to amplify the voices and experiences of women of color in the reproductive health, rights, and justice movement, In Our Own Voice has grown to be a powerful force in the fight for reproductive justice. The organization needed a path to financial independence that could reduce reliance on traditional grant funding while expanding their reach and impact.
With a grant from Progressive Multiplier, In Our Own Voice launched a comprehensive digital fundraising initiative designed to build a sustainable individual donor program from the ground up.
By designing a multi-faceted approach that included digital infrastructure improvements, email marketing, paid advertising, and conversion optimization, In Our Own Voice built a foundation for financial independence while strengthening their movement-building capacity. The project transformed their approach to fundraising and created pathways for deeper community engagement.
In Our Own Voice's digital fundraising initiative consisted of several integrated components designed to build sustainable revenue while engaging supporters across multiple touchpoints:
Digital Infrastructure Audit & Optimization
Email Marketing & Donor Cultivation
Paid Digital Advertising
Recurring Donor Development
Digital Infrastructure Is Foundation, Not Afterthought
Before launching sophisticated fundraising campaigns, In Our Own Voice needed to address fundamental technical issues. SEO corrections, analytics fixes, and donation page optimization weren't glamorous work, but they were essential prerequisites for effective digital fundraising. Organizations cannot multiply results without first ensuring their digital foundation is solid.
Welcome Before You Ask
The welcome series proved critical for donor conversion. By introducing new supporters to In Our Own Voice's mission and impact before making financial asks, the organization built trust and connection that translated into higher conversion rates and stronger donor relationships. Cultivation must precede solicitation.
Recurring Donors Provide Stability and Multiplier Effects
Monthly sustainers became the backbone of predictable revenue. These 87 recurring donors not only provided reliable income but also showed significantly higher retention rates and lifetime value compared to one-time donors. The compounding effect of recurring revenue creates exponential returns over time.
Email Remains a Powerful Revenue Channel
Despite concerns about email fatigue, strategic email campaigns with compelling storytelling and clear calls to action generated substantial results. The key was systematic testing, segmentation, and providing value in every communication—not just making asks.
Data Systems Enable Everything Else
Clean data and standardized processes proved essential for effective donor targeting, personalized engagement, and accurate measurement. Without proper systems in place, even the best strategies cannot reach their full potential.
For In Our Own Voice, building a sustainable individual donor base means more than diversified revenue—it means independence, resilience, and the ability to stay true to their mission without compromise. Foundation grants, while valuable, often come with restrictions and the constant uncertainty of renewal. The 331 individual donors and 87 monthly sustainers represent flexible, unrestricted funding that can be deployed where it's needed most: responding quickly to emerging threats to reproductive justice, investing in innovative programs, and maintaining operations during funding gaps.
These donors are not just funding the work—they are joining the movement. Each represents a committed supporter who believes in amplifying the voices of Black women in the reproductive justice movement, creating a community that can be mobilized for advocacy, engaged as volunteers, and cultivated into major gift prospects over time. As reproductive rights face unprecedented attacks across the country, this financial independence becomes even more critical, providing the stable foundation necessary to sustain long-term advocacy and continue centering Black women's leadership in the fight for reproductive autonomy.
The digital infrastructure and donor cultivation systems built through this initiative position In Our Own Voice to achieve their three-year goal of $352,000 in individual giving revenue while maintaining the 6:1 ROI target. More importantly, they create the foundation for a sustainable funding model that can support the organization's mission for decades to come—ensuring that Black women's voices remain at the center of the reproductive justice movement, regardless of the political or philanthropic landscape.
