In Our Own Voice: National Black Women's Reproductive Justice Agenda (IOOV) is a 501(c)(4) tax-exempt organization headquartered in Washington, D.C., founded to build power with Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people to secure reproductive autonomy through policy advocacy, organizing, and movement building. With a focus on Georgia and other Southern states, alongside national advocacy work, IOOV centers the lived experiences of Black communities most impacted by reproductive injustice.
With a $25,000 grant from Progressive Multiplier Fund, IOOV developed a comprehensive digital fundraising initiative to build sustainable revenue streams through major donor cultivation and monthly giving programs. By designing an integrated approach that included digital advertising campaigns, email welcome series, and strategic storytelling, IOOV built a foundation for financial independence while strengthening their capacity to respond rapidly to threats against reproductive justice.
IOOV's digital fundraising initiative consisted of several integrated components designed to diversify revenue while engaging different segments of their supporter base:
Through this experiment, IOOV identified several critical insights:
Center Authentic Black Women's Voices Personal stories and testimonials from Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people generate the strongest response from potential supporters and create emotional connections that drive action.
Invest in Digital Infrastructure Building sustainable fundraising requires dedicated tools, clean data systems, and standardized processes for effective donor targeting and engagement across multiple platforms.
Leverage Cultural Moments Strategically Aligning campaigns with key dates like Black Maternal Health Week, Dobbs anniversary, and electoral cycles maximizes relevance and urgency for potential donors.
Test and Optimize Continuously Experimenting with different audience segments, ad copy variations, visual content, and calls-to-action reveals what resonates most with Black communities and reproductive justice supporters.
Build Rapid Response Capacity The post-Dobbs landscape requires organizations to pivot quickly, making flexible budgets and pre-built emergency response templates essential for effective advocacy.
Connect Fundraising to Mission Framing revenue generation as essential to protecting Black reproductive autonomy helps overcome hesitation about asking for money and reinforces organizational values.
Through this initiative, IOOV created replicable digital infrastructure for mobilizing Black women, girls, and gender-expansive people during critical moments of reproductive injustice, establishing culturally relevant pathways for community members to connect with advocacy work. Their strategy deployed targeted Meta advertising campaigns and educational lead magnets including the Reproductive Justice Community Guide and Black Maternal Health Crisis Report, which resonated deeply with Black communities across the South by addressing specific barriers they face in accessing reproductive healthcare.
This approach not only raised funds but enhanced IOOV's visibility and social capital within reproductive justice networks and progressive donor communities, strengthened relationships with reproductive justice funders and individual donors through transparent impact reporting, and built capacity to participate in rapid response coalitions during policy emergencies.
