Youth In Action Rhode Island (YIA) is on a mission to empower young people as agents of change in their communities. Known for its transformative youth leadership programming and commitment to intergenerational collaboration, YIA is taking its work to the next level with a project that monetizes its expertise while amplifying its impact.
Youth in Action transformed their workshop program from an undervalued service to a sustainable revenue stream. By implementing a tiered pricing system that reflects the true cost and value of their youth-led workshops, YIA built a foundation for financial independence while strengthening their core mission. The organization moved from charging as little as $250 for workshops that cost three times that amount to produce to a structured pricing model that honors their work's true value.
Youth in Action positioned themselves to achieve a significant milestone: generating more earned income than grant revenue in the coming year. Despite implementation challenges including staff transitions, the organization developed structures and systems that will support their financial sustainability for years to come.
Their workshop program directly advances their mission by providing another platform where youth can practice leadership and change-making. By properly valuing their services, YIA not only improved their financial outlook but also challenged the systemic undervaluation of youth-led work.
The project sparked organization-wide conversations about program development and revenue impact, serving as a professional development opportunity for staff to learn about earned income models.
Looking ahead, YIA plans to maintain healthy growth targets while developing their train-the-trainer program to ensure knowledge transfer and program sustainability.
