Youth in Action RI: Monetizing Youth-Led Workshops to Amplify Impact

Youth In Action Rhode Island (YIA)  is on a mission to empower young people as agents of change in their communities. Known for its transformative youth leadership programming and commitment to intergenerational collaboration, YIA is taking its work to the next level with a project that monetizes its expertise while amplifying its impact.

Sarah Kern - Youth In ActionOverview

Youth in Action transformed their workshop program from an undervalued service to a sustainable revenue stream. By implementing a tiered pricing system that reflects the true cost and value of their youth-led workshops, YIA built a foundation for financial independence while strengthening their core mission. The organization moved from charging as little as $250 for workshops that cost three times that amount to produce to a structured pricing model that honors their work's true value.

Key Strategies & Tactics

  • Tiered Pricing Structure: Developing a five-tier pricing system based on client budget size, ranging from $720 for small organizations to $4,500 for large institutions
  • Value-Based Negotiations: Strategically withholding the full pricing scale from clients to negotiate based on budget and capacity rather than having clients self-select the lowest tier
  • Train-the-Trainer Model: Creating a scalable program that monetizes their curriculum while providing meaningful leadership opportunities for youth and alumni
  • Digital Presence Enhancement: Revamping their website to better communicate their value proposition and overcome initial skepticism about youth-led programming

Lessons Learned

  • Know Your True Value: The grant created time and space to understand the value of their workshops and implement structures to uphold those values
  • Start Negotiations Higher: Beginning pricing conversations above break-even points rather than at minimum viable rates leads to better outcomes
  • Be Willing to Walk Away: With sufficient demand, focusing on clients who value services appropriately is more sustainable than accepting undervalued partnerships
  • Invest in Documentation: Creating standard operating procedures and training materials helps weather staff transitions and ensures program continuity
  • Communicate Value Clearly: Improved marketing materials that articulate the value proposition are essential for overcoming skepticism about youth-led programming

Impact

Youth in Action positioned themselves to achieve a significant milestone: generating more earned income than grant revenue in the coming year. Despite implementation challenges including staff transitions, the organization developed structures and systems that will support their financial sustainability for years to come.

Their workshop program directly advances their mission by providing another platform where youth can practice leadership and change-making. By properly valuing their services, YIA not only improved their financial outlook but also challenged the systemic undervaluation of youth-led work.

The project sparked organization-wide conversations about program development and revenue impact, serving as a professional development opportunity for staff to learn about earned income models.

Looking ahead, YIA plans to maintain healthy growth targets while developing their train-the-trainer program to ensure knowledge transfer and program sustainability.
