Justice Outside: Mission Meets Revenue

Justice Outside advances racial justice and equity in the outdoor and environmental movement. While providing training and support to others in the environmental space, they identified a valuable opportunity to increase the revenue from their consulting efforts.

“People had been asking us to do training around diversity, equity, inclusion, justice, and belonging issues in their organization,” said Robert Sindelar, Chief Advancement Officer of Justice Outside. “We had been doing zero marketing for this but were still making money. And there was more demand than we were able to deliver.”

For this model to bring in more revenue, Justice Outside knew they had to create a pool of trained consultants to deliver education on their behalf. Leadership staff at Justice Outside were providing the training, but it was taking up too much of their time — and pulling them away from other strategic priorities.

With a grant from Progressive Multiplier, Justice Outside created and hosted an institute to train a team of consultants. To create a consistent experience, they packaged four of their most popular training, covering topics such as the fundamentals of equity and inclusion, microaggressions, and how to navigate white supremacy, into modules that were easily delivered. To increase their reach, they put systems in place to target and track participants.

As a result, over the course of the project, the leadership staff at Justice Outside spent only 25 hours on consulting, rather than 195 hours as they had during the same time period in the past. In addition, Justice Outside made $60,000 in the first half of 2023 and expects to generate more than $370,000 in the next three years.

For Justice Outside, this project created a new revenue stream that can be used independently of any funder, but its success stretches far beyond the finances. By opening up staff time, building a team of leaders, and teaching equity, the project is driving a more inclusive environmental movement and directly impacting the mission.

Justice Outside advances racial justice and equity in the outdoor and environmental movement, working to shift resources to, build power with, and center the voices and leadership of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color because the health of current and future generations demands it.
