National Center for Transgender Equality - Crisis Donor Conversion & Retention

Founded to advance equality for transgender people through advocacy, education, and empowerment, the National Center for Transgender Equality (NCTE), now part of Advocates for Trans Equality (A4TE), has become a leading voice in the fight for transgender rights. The organization needed a strategic approach to convert surge donors—who give during crisis moments—into sustained supporters capable of fueling long-term advocacy work.

Overview

The National Center for Transgender Equality faces a challenge common to civil rights organizations: significant donation surges during crisis moments that rarely convert to sustained support. Like other transgender nonprofits, NCTE receives an influx of gifts when anti-transgender legislation makes headlines, but these crisis donors typically disappear once media attention fades, creating an unstable revenue base that undermines long-term advocacy capacity.

With support from Progressive Multiplier, NCTE launched a renewed digital email fundraising program to answer a fundamental question: Could crisis donors be converted into sustained supporters, or was their single gift all they had to give? Through strategic email campaigns, message testing (uplifting vs. attacking tone), donor segmentation, and optimized donation forms, NCTE set out to re-engage lapsed crisis donors, retain new crisis donors by securing critical second gifts, and build the infrastructure for predictable recurring revenue.

Key Strategies & Tactics

NCTE's renewed digital email fundraising initiative consisted of multiple integrated experiments designed to test what motivates crisis donors and how to retain them:

  • Re-Engagement Campaigns for Lapsed Crisis Donors: Targeted email series to donors who gave during previous crisis moments but had not given again, testing one-time versus monthly donation asks
  • Crisis Donor Retention Program: Email campaigns to retain newly acquired crisis donors by securing critical second gifts before they lapsed
  • Message Testing—Uplifting vs. Attacking: Comparing positive messaging about wins in supportive ("blue") states versus urgent messaging about threats in hostile ("red") states
  • Geographic Segmentation: Tailoring messaging based on donor location—"sound the alarm elsewhere" messaging for donors in safe states versus "we're fighting alongside you" messaging for donors in states under attack
  • Action-First Sequencing: Testing whether asking donors to take a local action before making a financial ask improved conversion rates compared to direct solicitation

Lessons Learned

NCTE's renewed digital program generated critical insights that will shape their fundraising strategy for years to come:

  • Surge Donors Were the Lowest-Performing Segment: Contrary to expectations, crisis donors performed worse than even non-donors who had never given before—a sobering discovery that challenged assumptions about donor potential
  • Delayed Engagement Was Likely the Cause: NCTE believes that waiting too long to re-engage surge donors after their initial gift was the primary reason for poor performance, suggesting the critical importance of immediate follow-up
  • Uplifting Messaging Outperformed Attacking Messaging: Positive messages about NCTE's wins and impact generated better response than urgent crisis-focused appeals
  • Action-First Sequences Showed Promise: Donors who were asked to take a local action before receiving a donation ask appeared more likely to give, suggesting the value of building engagement before solicitation
  • Non-Surge Donors Exceeded Expectations: The program's greatest success came from engaging the broader donor base, converting 232 non-donors and 226 monthly donors—demonstrating that crisis moments can catalyze giving from unexpected segments
  • Infrastructure Investment Pays Long-Term Dividends: Learning to use new database tools, including A/B testing capabilities, accelerated NCTE's fundraising sophistication and will benefit all future campaigns

Impact

For NCTE, improving donor retention and conversion strengthens its ability to defend and advance transgender equality. The growth in monthly donors and $32,000 in new annual recurring revenue provides a stable funding base for policy advocacy, education, and rapid response to legislative attacks. These supporters are not just contributors—they are committed advocates investing in long-term change, allowing NCTE to plan ahead rather than rely on unpredictable, crisis-driven funding.

The stronger donor base also helps NCTE build deeper relationships and communicate more effectively across its community. With better insight into what motivates supporters, the organization can mobilize resources and grassroots action more quickly when new threats emerge. Over time, this approach increases financial independence and positions NCTE to pursue proactive policy change, strengthening its ability to secure lasting equality for transgender people.
