Bethany Maki, Progressive Multiplier’s Executive Director, has been selected for Rockwood’s 2025 National Leading From the Inside Out (LIO) Fellowship, one of the most respected training programs for social change leaders. This competitive fellowship brings together a cohort of nationally recognized changemakers with unique perspectives, skills, and strategies for building a more just and equitable world.
Bethany’s selection speaks volumes about her decades of work as a nonprofit development strategist. She’s spent 23 years partnering with nonprofit groups to grow in scale and self-determination through independent revenue generation—paving the way for progressive movements to build the power needed to serve their communities.
“I attended Rockwood Leadership Institute's Art of Leadership for Philanthropic Leaders in March and was forever changed. That sounds overly dramatic, but it truly was a transformative week for me as an executive director and as a person. It cemented the connection between the two for me and gave me an entirely new skill set for staying resourced in the work of social change leadership. To be in a community of practice for an entire year with this extraordinary cohort of movement leaders as part of the National LIO Fellowship is an opportunity I am just starting to metabolize.”
At Progressive Multiplier, Bethany leads with an unwavering commitment to evolution, championing the idea that organizing financial capital is key to driving systemic change. This mindset shapes the leadership of our entire team, who are equally dedicated to evolving our strategies to strengthen movements and ensure long-term impact. Bethany's leadership training has a ripple effect across the team, deepening our collective commitment to growth and innovation. As Polly Stamatopoulos, our Senior Director of Programs, puts it:
“Bethany came back from Rockwood changed. She was focused and driven to make Progressive Multiplier stronger. The tools and perspectives she brought back challenged and stretched us as a team and improved our work. I’m confident her participation in this yearlong cohort will continue to expand her personal and professional development, as well as ours, and the hundreds of organizations and professionals we touch will be all the better for it.”
Bethany shares the team’s excitement:
“Our team has dedicated a lot of time this year to connecting the personal dimensions that affect how we work to our actual operations. Much of that has been informed by Rockwood Leadership Institute's publishing and training. As a 2025 National LIO fellow, I will have the opportunity to share all of the skills and practices I learn with my teammates to strengthen our collaboration. Resourced leadership and healthy collaboration will support PM in achieving its vision of a sustainable progressive movement with the scale and power to achieve justice, realize democracy and restore the environment."
Building community has never felt more urgent or necessary for our team, especially in today’s complex social and political climate. That’s why Janet Davison, our Senior Manager of Operations and Project Management, is excited “to support Bethany in taking the Rockwood teachings and implementing them internally within our organization and externally with our community of movement groups to build a stronger, more sustainable community that can weather the change and uncertainty of what's to come.”
We all look forward to how this experience will help us build a stronger foundation for the progressive movement and are rooting for our colleague and friend on the journey ahead.
